The surface finish of castings can be as critical to quality as for any precision surface. Yet, finish requirements in the industry are often ill defined, loosely referencing RMS roughness or Ra values.
We recently had the opportunity to work with Mark White, Technical Director at Impro Aerotek USA, Inc., on a paper titled, “Surface Finish: Requirements and Inspection.” White does a great job of introducing the nuances of specifying and inspecting surface finish, with specific examples from casting and related processes.
The paper has recently been presented at the AFS (American Foundry Society) Metal Casting Congress and at the European Investment Casters’ Federation Conference. It will also be presented at the upcoming Investment Casting Institute Technical Conference and is slated to appear in Modern Casting Magazine.
Thanks and congratulations to Mark White for helping spread the word in the casting community about these important quality topics!
