When we think of surface roughness, we often think of machined surfaces. But 3D optical measurement is also essential for controlling much more polished surfaces, such as optical components. Over the years we’ve had to make a tradeoff when measuring these surfaces: we could either measure the larger surface shapes over a larger area, or measure the finer roughness but only over a small area. In this video we look at how a newer optical measurement mode enables high resolution texture measurement over large surfaces—even highly curved surfaces such as lenses.
